Thus far the circuit components or elements discussed were in the context of static or dc circuits. This means that all voltages and currents are time invariant. If time varying signals are present then for the resistor, for example, the voltage and current obey ohms law at every instant in time. The introduction of time varying signals can come about through the introduction of a time dependent voltage or current source and/or by a switching transient. There are two new additional ideal circuit elements that have terminal characteristics which involve time: the inductor and the capacitor. Both are passive elements and both are capable of storing energy.
