Houses an immature ova (oocyte) that"s surrounded by: Follicle cells (if only 1 cell layer is present) Granulosa cells (if more than 1 layer is present) Follicles go through several stages of development: Primary follicle: single layer of cells surrounding oocyte, becomes secondary. Secondary follicle: (more mature) 2 or more layers surrounding oocyte, becomes vesticular. Graafian/vesicular follicle: (mature) a fluid-filled antrum forms, isolating oocyte. Follicle is sitting on stalk of cells to support it & Serval eggs go through this process at the same time to push it out. Fsh & lh are elevated at birth but drop low until prepubertal years.
