Produce gametes (sex cells): sperm & ova (eggs) Takes 74 days from the beginning of production to ejaculation for a sperm to mature: scrotum. Houses testes & keeps sperm @ -93*f. Lie w/ in scrotum & produce sperm. Seminiferous tubules: ^ surface area for sperm. Can be corrected by surgery or time. If testes left in abdomen, can lead to: Testicular cancer (most common risk w/ crypt. ) Rare, but most common in men age 15-35. Having mumps that lead to orchitis (inflammation of testis) could be a risk factor. 90% cured by surgical removal of testis & often radiation or chemotherapy. 1st part of duct system (to carry sperm out of body) Where sperm matures/grows & where tail forms. Non motile sperm: pass slowly through (20 days) & become motile sperm (can be stored for several months) Tail: where sperm is stored before ejaculation.
