Document Summary

Introduction to the world of microscopes: terms to know, using the microscope. Why study microscopy: because we can"t see everything. Microscope history: 12th century, fle glasses, 1590, dutch create first double-lens microscope, 1609, galileo galilei develops compound microscope with convex and concave lens, 1900s, ultramicroscope, phase-contrast microscope, electron microscope, scanning-tunneling microscope. Increase apparent size: resolution, power needed to show details clearly. Parts: ocular lens, gives magnification of 10x, body tube, revolving nosepiece, objective lens, 3 different lenses, smaller = less magnified, arm. Stage clips: coarse adjustment knob, moves the platform quite a bit. Fine adjustment knob: moves the platform very little, diaphragm, controls amount of light that enters through stage. Magnification: multiply ocular lens by objective lens, ocular = 10x, objective = 40x, magnification = 400x. Staining: adds clarity, helps distinguish structures, different stains target different structures. Look through the eyepiece lens and focus upward only.
