Document Summary

Myth #8: perceptual systems are independent of each other. Truth: various perceptual systems actually influence and interact with each other (eg: vision, audition, touch, taste, smell) This creates a conflict so we must compromise. Visual + auditory perception is of da . We resolve the conflict by hearing a combination. Doesn"t change the actual sound, it just changes the perception. Long visual corresponds to long auditory note. Visual makes you misperceive the location of the sound. Wine experiment: tasted red wine (reported red wine flavors like cherry, clove, etc. ) but then found out it was actually white wine with food coloring. When you"re sick, food doesn"t taste as good. Rubber hand illusion: believing that a fake hand is your hand and feeling pain. One dot flashes, but there are two beeps so it is perceived as two. If so, vision could affect other senses, but other senses could not affect vision. Wrong as evidenced by the sound flash illusion.
