Stereotypes- beliefs about the characteristics of an individual based on group membership. Discrimination- an unjustifiable negative behavior toward a group and its members that is based solely on group membership. Prejudice- negative emotional responses to people based on group membership; prejudgment. Iat- implicit associations test: how quickly and how accurately you are able to sort through pairs of pictures/words. It"s okay if some groups have more of a chance in life than others. To get ahead in life, it"s okay if some groups get stepped on more than others. Social dominance orientation- desire for group-based dominance and hierarchy (inequality) in a social system. Low sdo: hierarchy attenuating- not supporting a hierarchal system, more equal power. Negatively correlates with empathy, tolerance, communality, and altruism. Relatively stable across time; related to explicit racism. Dominant groups: higher levels of social dominance orientation. Stereotype threat- a disruptive concern, when facing a negative stereotype, that one will be evaluated based on this stereotype .
