In early childhood, children self explore their bodies, they may even play doctor or house with other playmates to explore each others bodies. This includes the phallic stage, in which a child finds gender identity. Puberty- the time in life when an individual first shows sexual attraction and becomes capable of reproduction. Secondary sex characteristics- bodily changes that occur during puberty and differentiate men and women. Girls: breast buds, pubic hair, menarche- term for a girls first menstrual period. Boys: growth of testicles and scrotum and increased testosterone, nocturnal emission- an ejaculation that occurs during sleep in teenaged boys and men, some boys can experience gynecomastia- excessive development of male breasts, pubic and facial hair. Precocious puberty- condition in which puberty begins before the age of 8 in girls and 9 in boys. Delayed puberty- condition in which the appearance of secondary sex characteristics and physical growth do not begin until well after they have begun in most children.
