Consilience- we are all part of a system that has large and small pieces

Courage

• More likely to say that things are courageous when they were a positive experience
rather than a negative experience
• If someone does something that you agree with, but you do not see that it is risky then

• Courage also relates back to historical times but there are not from history on earth that
can talk about courage- this is a problem within research
Personality- what makes some people different than other people
• Happens at the level of the individual but explained in the brain, genetics, and a
molecular level as well as cultural levels
• The Big Fie- the most widely known structure of personality
Mental Disorders
• Closely linked to personality
• Can look at many levels to explain mental disorders and how they behave in society and
the institutions set up to help them
• Can look at the individual to understand their experience and can treat them with
psychotherapy and/or drugs
• Mental disorders are not just a chemical imbalance

• Solar scale- ex: feeling more alert in the morning rather than at night

• To make other feel more alert brighter lights and a less soothing environment is not
necessary
• Scientific scale- ex: creating an energy drink by using a substance like caffeine
• Psychological scale- ex: if the lights were off and we were laying down would we fall
asleep?
Proficiency in Math
• Opportunities that people have to learn math in different places
• People doing math in an MRI machine
• Psychological scale- ex: how good am I and others at math
• Number of people in a mathematic related career
• Cultural scale- ex: the way other cultures and places teach math

What Makes Psychology Different?
1. Focus on the individual
• The person is more important than the situation
2. Research methods
• Look at data
• A lot of collaboration
• Interested in finding out how the studies turn out
• Empirical- evidence based off of scientific observations (present data- at the core of
everything)
o Theory-> Prediction-> Observations-> Do the observations support the theory or
not

• What and how you want to measure
o Ex: Motivation- how motivated are you feeling right now? (Scale of 1-7)
