A note on babbie"s terminology field research versus qualitative research (use) Remember, qualitative research is not about numbers, it is about non-numeric data. Remember, qualitative research fundamentally looks for data that are rich and explanatory. Qualitative research seeks to generate deep, contextual understandings. In some applications, the intent is for the results to be transferable to other similar situations studying environment in the eyes of a child, have them draw it out and analyze the drawing. Why: social interactions, organizational culture, social roles, contextual activities or behaviors. Consider degree of objectivity, interactions with those studied, and perspective. People reacting to being studied, hawthorne effect (it is the problem of research subjects reacting to being studied, instead of acting normally. It can be dealt with by using deception. (higher level of scrutiny with irb, must justify why) studying one thing but actually studying another.
