Document Summary

The amount of nutrients needed depends on: Dietary reference intakes (dris): this is the general term used for the nutrient intake standards for healthy people. Recommended dietary allowances (rdas) are the levels of essential nutrient intake judged to be adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of particularly all (98 percent) of healthy people while decreasing the risk of certain chronic diseases. Adequate intakes (ais) are tentative rdas, meaning they are based on less conclusive scientific information than the rdas are. Estimated average requirements (ears) are the nutrient intake values that are estimated to meet the requirements of half the healthy individuals in a group. These are generally used to assess adequacy of intakes of population groups. Tolerable upper levels (uls) are the upper limits of nutrients compatible with health, meaning that they do not reflect the desired levels of intake.
