MICR-4010 Lecture 14: Class 25: chapter 23
Document Summary
The relationship b/w squid and vibrio is a symbiotic relationship of cooperation. The squid benefits because vibrio takes up residence in the squids light organ and bioluminescence. This bioluminescence helps the squid ward off predators at night because it helps remove the shadow cast on the ocean floor by the moon. The vibrio benefits from this interaction by getting a safe place to stay and an abundance of nutrients. The squid-vibrio relationship is a great model for animal-microbe interactions because it can be established in such a short time, the light organ of the squid is only colonized by vibrio and they cannot grow in lab. Establishment of relationship: establishment of this symbiotic relationship occurs via horizontal transmission. During the day the vibrio empties the light organ expelling all of the vibrio into the surrounding environment. The vibrio does not go far, meaning that when a squid is born it is immediately colonized by the vibrio.
