Confederate units to hold flank were pushed back. Some union troop swore gray, some union troops wore gray: largest battle fought on north american soil. Wade hampton: south carolina, held ground for awhile, unit was shattered. Thomas jay jackson: stonewall, former us army officer, went to west point, professor at vmi, took confederate brigade to most prominent terrain feature was a hill with house on it.
