Document Summary

Gen 3000, 02/01/2017, lecture 8, chapters 4 & 5. When a plant has some green leaves and some white leaves, the green leaves keep the white leaves alive. Cytoplasmic inheritance only mom is contributing. Genetic maternal effect phenotype is determined by genotype: s+ = wild type, s = mutant, the mother"s genotype determines the phenotype of the offspring. Example during embryogenesis, the mother"s cells will start making a shell for the baby snail. Genomic imprinting the origin of the gene is important. Humans have a chromosomal sex determining system. Hymenoptera bees and ant: haplodiploidy all of the chromosomes determine the sex of an individual. Genetic sex determining system the genes determine the sex of an individual. Environmental sex determination: environmental sex determination overlaps with genetic sex determination, since the genes determine the sex, but the environment determines which genes are triggered, turtles and alligators use this method, slipper limpets. Slipper limpet larva float through the water and land somewhere.
