Document Summary

Chapter 16 - spinal cord and spinal nerves. Slightly flattened on anterior + posterior surface. Regions where spinal cord doesn"t match up directly w/ vertebrae. Marks official end of spinal cord proper. Protected and encapsulated by spinal column meninges which are continuous w/ cranial. T1-t2 cell bodies of autonomic motor neurons. Communications route between left and right sides of gray matter. Within regions of gray matter observe various functional groups of neuron cell bodies nuclei. Autonomic - innervate smm, cardiac muscle and glands. Formed from union of motor and sensory axons. Roots of lumbar and sacral spinal nerves travel up to reach perspective intervertebral foramina before they merge from nerve to exit. Principal plexuses named nerves that innervate (supply) various body structures. Most thoracic spinal nerves do not form plexuses. Rapid, automatic, involuntary rxns of muscle or glands to stimulus. Response requires few neurons - synaptic delay = minimal. Automatic response occurs the same way every time.
