Culture is an emergent process - it never stops until you die: through interaction you exchange ideas, develop common ideas, common ways of doing things, common interpretations for certain actions, result you have created a culture. Culture channels human behavior: it is essential in the maintenance of any social system because it provides for predictability of action and stability. Society: people who interact in a defined territory and share a culture. Culture: ways of thinking and acting: material objects, ideas that form a way of life. Material culture: physical things created by members of society - give meaning and absorb them into our culture. Non-material (symbolic) culture: ideas created by members of society, common elements: We create symbols and the only way we can understand is with commonality. We communicate through signs, gestures and language: economically and time bound. Language: key to accumulating knowledge and how you pass it on. Cultural transmission: passing culture one generation to the next.
