Document Summary

How do we define what a species is. Not the basic unit of evolution (gene) but it is the next best thing in paleo. Group of individuals that can breed together but not other individuals outside of that group. Genetic species concept: a group of genetically compatible interbreeding natural populations that is genetically isolated from other such groups. Ecological species concept: a lineage (or a closely related set of lineages) which occupies a niche different from that of any other lineage in its range and which evolves separately from all lineages outside its range. Niche - what role an organism plays in its environment, work. Morphological species concept: a group whose distinctive morphological characters are, in the opinion of a competent scientist, sufficiently distinctive to merit a specific name. Look different enough from everything else that it can be assumed they satisfy the criterion of all other species concepts.
