Magma forces ground up, it tilts away from the center of uplift by a fraction of a degree. Detects changes in the release of gases from a volcano. Remote sensing (satellite images) used to monitor ash, lava flows, and topographic deformation. Lidar - lasers used to monitor growth of domes inside the crater. Large eruptions can influence climate and life on earth. Climate change - temperature drops significantly after an eruption. Year without summer - indonesian eruption in 1815 ejected enough ash to block sun. Lake toba - ejected 28,000 km3 of ash. May have caused a genetic bottleneck for humans. Igneous rocks can tell you inner workings, composition, and structure of earth. Lips (large igneous provinces), traps, continental rifting, and mass extinctions. Large areas of basaltic outpourings usually associated with hotspots.
