Document Summary

There can be many reasons as to why professional caregivers may experience stress in caring for the dying. Because of this frequent stress and tragedy, these professionals need to learn to deal with their own anxieties and stress of dying. In the text it discusses a three step approach to dealing with trauma. The first step is a defusing step and it should be done the day that this traumatic event takes place. This is to assure that the people involved know that feeling this stress is normal, allow them to understand the symptoms they should watch for short term, and offer a lifeline to contact. Two to three days later a debriefing occurs where affected individuals can talk about their experience and discuss their preferred coping strategy. And the final step is a follow up to ensure these people are safe and coping well and if not, be referred to professional counseling.
