Document Summary

When one dies there are choices on how that body will be disposed for sanitary reasons. Bodies are disposed in different ways because of social, cultural, religious, psychological, and personal choices. Burial is a popular form of disposal of the dead. Burial can either happen underground, six feet under the earth"s surface, or entombment in a mausoleum, which is an above ground structure in which one or more bodies are entombed Entombment in a mausoleum is about two thousand dollars. Some cemeteries permit memorials or different sized grave markers that also add onto the cost. Some also assess an endowment cost that subsidizes the upkeep of the cemetery. Cremation is also a choice of disposal of the dead. The body is put in intense heat that reduces the organic components of a body to a mineralized skeleton. An average sized body take about one-half hours to reduce.
