Chapter 10 questions 3 and 4: list and evaluate at least four mechanisms that children use to cope with terminal illness. The way children cope with terminal illness has many different factors. The age of the child is a huge factor having to do with how they cope with illness. An older child will most likely have a better grasp on death than a younger child would. The older child will most likely cope better with the situation. One coping mechanism used by children is distancing strategies. This is when the child distances themselves from friends and relatives to limit the amount of close relationships they have. By doing this they are subconsciously trying to reduce the number of possible losses. When an illness prevents a child from playing a sport, they may cope by finding a substitute for sport or activity. For example, kids in a hospital being competitive in some sort of game with a nurse.
