Why: travelers had to go miles upstream to find a place to cross the river (ford) Largest river in north america (2,552 miles long) People were diverted far to the south risked high passes through mountains, sometimes getting stranded in unpredictable winter snowstorms. Proclamation line of 1763 (end french & indian war) forbade british colonists to pass beyond designated western borderline which followed appalachian. Angered colonists bc they had to pay for british soldiers to patrol the border. Bc of this many colonists ignored the border & moved west to settle anyways. Still difficult for settlers to get through appalachian.
