Exam might reveal swelling and tenderness in the affected area. As pain subsides, physical therapy might be initiated to restore strength and flexibility. Prevention : avoid extreme fatigue and warm up before exercise. Description : traumatic injury to a joint with partial or complete tearing of ligaments. Can be so painful joint cannot be used. Degree of ligament tearing, plus involvement of associated tendons, muscles, and blood vessels determine degree of injury. Severe sprains can exhibit complete tearing of the ligaments. Symptoms : varying degrees of swelling, pain, heat, and redness to purple or dark blue discoloration (from blood vessel hemorrhage). X-rays may be taken to rule out a fracture. In severe cases and mri and arthroscopy can be used. Mild sprains are treated with rice (rest, ice, compression and elevation).
