Socrates (470-399 bce: rst great philosopher in the west, short, fat, bald and ugly, self chosen poverty. Focused on the soul: confused with people called the sophists. Taught how to give persuasive speeches: taught for money, socrates taught how to nd the truth, personal magnetism, inductive arguments. Socratic methods of teaching/learning: curing for the psuche/psyche/soul/mind. Socrates taught plato: wrote about socrates. Socrates is accused of being atheism, and corrupting the youth: he is teaching that the young don"t know what they think they know. These kids are using their knew knowledge on their children. Tuesday, january 24, 2017: imprisoned, forced to drink poison. The socratic problem: when does the reader know if the ideas are socrates or plato, the problem of guring out which of the speeches by the character socrate in. Plato"s writing represent socrates" views and which represent plato"s views: the dominate scholarly view. Plato"s works: early phase: apology, crito, euthyphro, meno.
