Coronary heart disease: blockage of arteries that come off the aorta and come back around and feed the heart. Angina --> ischemia (lack of blood flow to heart) Coronary heart disease costs billion/year in us. Additional costs for hypertensive disease, stroke, heart failure. >1/3 (80 million) us adults live with 1+ types of cardiovascular disease. Increase in longevity --> increase in heart disease. Americans make >72 million doctor visits/year for treatment and management of cardiovascular diseases. >7 million hospitalizations occur each year due to cardiovascular diseases. Followed by cancer, accidents, renal disease, diabetes, alzheimer"s. Disease that may start in childhood and progress with age. Blood vessels lose a certain amount of elasticity with aging that can be exacerbated by poor lifestyle, health, and stress on circulatory system. Atheroma: nodular accumulation of soft, flaky, yellow material at the center of large plaques, composed of macrophages near the lumen of the artery. Calcification at outer base of older/more advanced lesion.
