CGS SS 101 Lecture 9: SS Lecture 11_13
Document Summary
Modernization: represents the shift from gemeinschaft to gesellschaft. Gemeinschaft: small, intimate relationships, small division of labor, religious (ethos) Gesellschaft: urban, sophisticated division of labor, secular division of order. People have profound changes of consciousness and social order. Rationalism: conscious effort to put order on behaviour to achieve a goal more efficiently. What weber saw to be the most important characteristic. Secularism: a preoccupation with the world of the here and the now. Opposite of sacred (the world of the spirit and holy) Faustian ethos: societies that attempt to control the social and natural world to serve their own needs and purposes. Specialization of labor: industrial and technological production are pervasive. Centralized policy: politically, the state becomes the main focus of all political activity. Bambuti compared to europe in middle ages. European culture was overwhelmingly religious in its ethos similar to bambuti. Church in europe is equated to the molimo. Economy was self-sufficient with little division of labor.
