Chp 11: cyberspace, digital media, and the internet. Telecommunications- communication over a distance: telegraph, telephone, television, radios, valves changed to transistors. Future gazing of cyberspace is often discussed in science fiction: two notable sf writers= jules verne and h. g. Minority report: film by spielberg, most detailed recent vision of future decades, retinal scanning, newspapers electronically updated, cars driving vertically up buildings, robot spiders. Three laws or three observed factors of cyberspace: moore"s law. The number of transistors that could be etched on to a computer chip would double every 18 months, or computer power doubles every year and a half: metcalf"s law. The value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of people using it: gilder"s law. Bandwidth will triple every year for the next twenty-five years. Technological determinism- the notion that contact between technology and society is one way and that technology shapes and causes social interactions.
