Jacob lau and ali sharif were roommates at boston university. Both were smg students who started a business selling phone cases for oversized cell phones (phones larger than 6 inches in height). The phones were sometimes called phablets to indicate that they could be used both as tablets and as cell phones. The two had observed the growing popularity of these larger phones while also noting that there was a limited selection of durable and attractive cases that could comfortably accommodate the larger height and width of these phones. They decided to start a business to address this market opportunity. They rented an embossing machine and worked with a manufacturer in central massachusetts who cut long sheets of neoprene into cases designed for the larger phones. Their first attempt was to create a case with the boston university logo stamped on the back of a black case.
