oAffordances and Constraints
Affordances- relation between object/environment that affords the
opportunity for that object to perform an action
Constraints- object, factor, or subsystem that works as a bottleneck and
restricts an entity, project, or system from its goal
Ex: Facebook Zero (Facebook that doesn’t have as many extra things,
but is just used to connect with people—despite the technological
limitations)
oAffordances easy text input, always on-data connection, address book
oConstraints no graphics, low bandwidth, spotty connectivity
Open Source Software
oFreely available for use/modification
Linux and MySQL
o“Hidden support costs”
oNo vendor to call when a problem arises
Combining Customized, Open Source and Off the Shelf Systems
oOff the shelf systems can be customized
oMay interact with open source systems (MySQL can be used to store data for a
small business ERP system)
