Document Summary

The bony structure of the thorax is called the thoracic cage and includes: 12 pairs of ribs and their costal cartilages (anterior cartilages that attach to the sternum) Attachment site for many muscles, including muscles of respiration but also extrinsic muscles of the upper extremity. Head: 2 facets, articulates with corresponding vertebra and vertebra superior to it. Tubercle: articular portion, for articulation with corresponding vertebra. Costal groove: location of intercostal nerve, artery and vein. Ribs form articulation, or joints, with the vertebrae. Each rib articulates with the vertebra of the same number, as well as with the body of the vertebra superior to it. The 7th rib will articulate with the vertebral body t7 as well as with the vertebral body of t6. The ribs also articulate with the transverse process of the vertebra at the same level. There are 12 pairs of ribs and their costal cartilages (hyaline cartilage) True ribs: 1-7: they articulate directly with the sternum.
