COM CO 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Kinesics, Proxemics
Document Summary
Like words, nonverbal can have multiple purposes and meanings (e. g. the same gesture can have multiple interpretations) Fixed space: objects that could not move (ie. the walls) that affect the way we interact. Objects affect how you communicate and interact (ie. rows or circles in classroom; rows draw focus to the instructor, circles encourage interaction among students) Nonverbal influences: anthromorphizing (making animals human-like with nonverbal) Akin to a dictionary definition (usually first entry in a dictionary, subsequent entries attempt to capture other types of meaning) Humans are a blend of rational and emotional. Naming new experiences (usually based on a combination of old names and experiences) Appropriation (taking something, usually verbal and nonverbal, and using it in a new way) Bricolage & counter-bricolage (taking objects and using it in a new way) Expectations can be exploited (ie. knock knock, banana, knock knock, orange joke) Meanings can be transferred; moving meanings of one thing to another (i feel pretty videos)
