The striatal habit system: packard and mcgaugh experiments contrasting place vs. Response learning: contrast early learning (hippocampal) with late learning (striatal). (early place/late response, shift from hippocampal to dorsal striatal system with learning (cognitive to habit, learning still occurs if you abolish one, but just at a different rate. An fmri study of the role of the mtl in implicit and explicit sequence learning. Mtl patients can learn a sequence so this is not a hippocampal task. On the other hand parkinson"s patients were impaired in this task: evidence from imaging (train subjects on task, then perform task in scanner: Activity is primarily in the striatum: some believe this was more so a striatal task, regardless of whether or not you know that there is a sequence you get faster over time while playing. If you"re not told there"s a sequence then it"s an implicit task.
