Most basic grammar is accomplished by age 4. 5-6, after that is development is all about refinement. Argued language is too abstract/complex to be learned solely through operant conditioning. Children infer grammatical rules through hearing it, they don"t actually learn grammar. Lad (language acquisition device): we are born with a pre-programmed, innate brain structure that allows us to learn language. Universal grammar: abstract, unconscious rules common to all languages, inborn innate grammar knowledge. Once you are exposed to a language, you select the grammar you need and lose the rest.
