For spoken language, this is sentence ordering: novel constructions: language is generative, there is no limit to how many sentences can be made and understood. First word occurs at 10-17 months, average is 13. Number of words in vocabulary starts slow, then rapidly increases at 18 months. First words are usually people, household items, animals, and vehicles (concrete objects) Fast mapping: rapidly narrowing down the meaning of a word after brief exposure. Children are predisposed to do this through constraints. They understand that the word dog refers to the whole animal and not just the tail.
