CAS PS 241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Palmar Grasp Reflex, Moro Reflex, Brainstem
Document Summary
States: the continuum of alertness or consciousness ranging various activity to regular sleep. Threshold of stimulation is high, takes an intense stimulus to wake baby up. Movement can occur, body limbs can jerk. Baby is most alert to stimuli in environment in this state, so researchers seek this state. Basic crying: when hungry, starts arrhythmic then gets rhythm (cry rest inhale rest) Anger: same pattern as basic, but crying segments are longer. Pain: sudden onset, short gasps (wet diaper is a form of pain) Most spent in some form of sleep. Researchers have a limited time window for alert inactivity. State changes matter for parent bonding too. Parents will bond better when babies are in the alert inactivity. First few months, crying is related to physiological needs, by 3 or 4 months, Psychological (crying to be picked up, played with) Rooting: if you rub an infant"s cheek it will turn towards you.
