CAS BI 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Paracrine Signalling, Human Body, Oxytocin Receptor

58 views3 pages
I. Osmolarity in the body
A. ICF and ECF are in a state of osmotic equilibrium
B. Water moves through water channels (aquaporins) in every cell
C. Water follows higher ion concentration (area of lower water concentration)
D. Mneumonic: solutes suck
E. applications : blood pressure, electrolyte drinks, osmotic balance of cells
II. Tonicity
A. Relative osmolarity of any solution surrounding a cell
B. Tonicity describes changes in cell volume if a cell is placed in a solution
1. Hypertonic - cell shrinks
2. Hypotonic - cell swells
3. Isotonic - no change in cell
C. Determined by permeability of solutes
D. If solute can penetrate membrane, it will move and come to equilibrium
1. NO net water movement
2. NO cell volume change
3. Ex: urea (lipophilic), glucose (slowly penetrating due to carriers)
E. If solute cannot penetrate mb, water will move by osmosis
1. Ex: NaCl, sucrose
III. Effects of Tonicity
A. Crenate: to shrink/shrivel
B. Swelling, bursting (in RBCs this is called hemolysis)
IV. Transport of large molecules
A. Endocytosis - solute joins with membrane that becomes a vesicle and buds off
B. Exocytosis - vesicle containing molecules merges with plasma membrane and
releases out of cell
V. Crossing biological barriers
A. Want to go apical to basal side
B. Paracellular pathway - through junction
C. Transcellular pathway - move through membrane/cell
1. Works when goes down concentration gradient
D. If you want to move water, need to use a solute bc water doesnt have a
transporter
VI. Protein-Ligand Interactions
VII. Cell Communication Vocab
A. -crine - to secrete
B. Cells use chemicals to communicate both locally and long-distance
C. Cytokine - a chemical used for communication between cells (usually local)
D. Hormone - chemical secreted into blood stream to accomplish communication
over long distances
E. Synapse - a physical junction between 2 cells
F. Systemic - all over the body
1. Opposite of local
G. Endo- : within
