How does a campus react when there’s a suicide or suicide(s) on campus?

Social Cohesion → Collective Conscience

- Everywhere, there is some level of crime. It’s healthy for society because it
reconfirms solidarity and shows social norms

- Crime is necessary to avoid anomie. The social response to crime reconfirms our

Functionalism
- An approach to understanding a social phenomenon in terms its contribution to society.
Durkheim’s functionalist theory of crime:
- Crime exists in every society, because the social response to deviance strengthens
social solidarity and cohesion. Some crime is necessary for a society to function.
Deviance - Violation of a social norm (robbing to farting in public)
Crime - Against a written law
- There are people who question and analyze the line between normal and abnormal.
Labeling Theory - (Rosenheim) If somebody is deviant it’s because someone has labelled
them deviant. Being labelled can affect their perception of self.
