Document Summary

Blast: a cell that builds tissue by secreting its components. Elastic ear, tips of nose, voice box: stretchy. Hyaline part of ribs, lining joints, between bone and elastic cartilage in nose: most abundant. Fibrocartilage knees (meniscus), hips (pubic symphysis), intervertebral discs: absorb impact. Cells: chondroblasts: produce matric of cartilage. Secrete matrix until it forms a lacunae around it: chondrocyte: cells in a lacunae. Resistant to compression: compression helps maintain cartilage by promoting fluid movement to cells. Joint cartilage: every time you move joint, new nutrients come in and waste is secreted. Vulnerable to twisting and bending (tears easily) Providing a model for bone formation during embryonic/fetal period. Covering of connective tissue that surrounds hyaline and elastic cartilage. Does not cover fibrocartilage has to do with absorbing shock. Contains connective tissue (periosteum) and cartilage connective tissue. Ground substance is rigid due to deposition of minerals in matrix: Calcification/mineralization: collagen fiber framework is essential for this process.
