The two main components are phospholipids and proteins (phospholipid bilayer). There are also carb chains (which tag cells for cell to cell recognition) and cholesterol (which helps maintain uidity). Membranes can also join two cells together (join a cell to the extracellular matrix). The plasma membrane separates the cell"s internal environment from the external. It controls the entrance and exit from the cell. Substances move across the membrane in different ways: Molecules move down concentration gradient due to their own kinetic energy.
