Whichever sex invests more effort and resources in offspring is the limiting resource for the reproduction of the less investing sex, and therefore the object of competition. Triver"s hypothesis: the sex investing the most becomes a limiting resource for the sex investing the least. Inter-sexual choice (aka female choice) - one sex choosing to mate with member of the other sex. Idea that females could have a choice was viewed as ludicrous by victorians. In many species, males are the more showier sex. In humans, women are the showier sex because male parental investment is extremely variable. Sexy son hypothesis - females mate with aggressive males which leads to select traits in female"s sons that will help him compete well with other males. Handicap principle - a male that"s able to survive despite such ornate signals must have good genes; eg. females are attracted to peacocks with giant feathers because they"ve been able to survive despite being prey.
