The battle of montmirail epitomized romantic painting, not only because it dealt with a contemporary theme but also because of the amount of pleasure it gave to the spectator. No longer was art expected to educate and edify the viewer by means of moralizing subjects and noble, idealized forms. Instead, it was to affect the spectator at a visceral level through subjects that evoked strong emotions, and colors and forms that appealed powerfully to the senses. Sense of immediacy and truth that is distinct from gro"s carefully constructed propaganda image. This painting depicts one of napoleon"s last successes in france, when he defeated the russian.
