Document Summary

Criticism is supposed to be a valued part of the western philosophical tradition and all university disciplines claim to be critical. However, there is a lot of misunderstanding about what critical" means. Being critical does not mean an irrational lashing-out at all that most of the population hold to be good and proper ways of behaving". The word critical comes from the ancient greek word kritikos, which literally means given to judging, or bringing into question. To be critical is not necessarily negative. It can be hopeful and hope-filled questioning of things to make better than they happen to be right now. Human beings living in society with all our conflicts, inequalities, and complex ways of behaving and construction our lives. This is arguably far more fraught than what physicists have to deal with in measuring atomic particles or biology"s observing cells in a microscope.
