During mid 1800s, he worked for trans-continental railroad. Phineas gage recovered but his behavior drastically changed- drink, womanizer etc. His brain was damaged in such a way that affected his personality. Brain was responsible only for sensory functions, but for a modern sophisticated personality. Physiological psychology: study of relationship between brain and behavior (cognition). Brain and behavior, brain and cognition can be studied (nervour system). Scientists are reductionists- break everything down in smallest units. Nervous system is made up of cells, called neurons. Gross level: whole thing, then breaking it apart- top-down. Red part- cell body: similar to all the other part of the body (soma) (golgi body, endoplasmic, mitochondria, organals). Roots (dandrites)- pick up signals from other neurons. The signals are transmitted across the soma and nucleus. Where the soma and axon meet= axon hillock.
