Document Summary
When and why were intelligence tests created: alfred binet: predicting school achievement. Law in france made all students go to school. France didn"t want to trust teachers to judge child"s learning potential, so hired binet to study problem. First he assumed hat all students follow same course of intellectual development, but some develop more rapidly than others. So dull child should perform like typical younger, and bright like typical older. Thus developed a mental age: a measure of intelligence test performance devised by binet that chronological age corresponds to a given level of performing. (ex: avg 8 year old = mental age of 8) To measure it, theorized that mental aptitude is a general capacity showing up in various ways. No assumptions as to why child was slow avg or precocious. He thought his sytem was just to identify french school children needing special attention. He feared it would label children and limit their opportunities.
