If you electrically stimulate this area in a rat, the rat will be hungry and want to eat. They wont starve to death, but eat barely enough to keep selves alive. If destroyed animal keeps eating and eating. Set point hypothesis: number of fat cells from when you are born from genetics. In infancy in childhood, eating behavior enables you to acquire more fat cells. Different people have different number of fat cells. Controversy is can you acquire more as adults. Some say no you have all the fat cells you will have, some say you can acquire more when fat cell gets 3 times avg size then you can have 2. Fat cells aren"t immortal you can replace them. So when someone diets, they don"t loose fat cells, they just get really small.
