When theory came popular it was in victorian times. Cathardists- let out emotion and felt better: hysteria- paralysis, cant move hands and cant feel them, blindness, deafness, facial ticks, more common in women, own hand does not feel like theirs. Id- wants pleasure, irrational feeling caldron of excitation , baby is pleasure seeking and irrational: libido- psychological, sexual energy, pleasure principle, subconscious. Ego (self)- rational, focuses on reality, when you don"t get what you want, parents may be busy and cant help, problem solver: reality principle, conscious, between 1-3 when you can"t get what you want. Superego: emerges in phallic period, made up of an ideal good you and list of don"ts, punishes you with guilt and anxiety. Repression- unacceptable thoughts and feelings pushed from conscious to unconscious but doesn"t last that long and can come back as dreams or slips of tongue so go to other defense mechanisms.
