The oboe has an intense sound and is responsible for tuning the orchestra to the a key. The english horn is bigger and lower than the oboe and warmer sounding. Recorder was a family with different sizes and ranges. Recorders were held vertically at first, but during the baroque period, they were held horizontally and made out of metal rather than wood.
