Meg, charles wallace and calvin are all subject to societal pressures and expectations in school settings and from their peers. They are able to display divergent character traits in defying these normal expectations and exceeding beyond the box that that everyone puts them in. From the beginning, it is clear that meg and charles are unique in their thoughts. Other students make fun of meg for her dumb baby brother although he is anything but that. Charles" ability to easily converse with older women and capacity to teach himself new vocabulary words shows his proclivity to intelligence. Meg is able to self- determine that she is an outcast at school and has a hard time identifying herself with others.
