Document Summary

For every 10 degrees c there is a 2-3x increase in energy consumption. Large animals have a lower energy consumption per gram. Heat loss is proportional to surface area (l^2) Heat loss is much less in large animals in proportion to heat generated. Shrews feed on more nutrient rich foods than elephants because they have heavy energy use. Mammals maintain their temperature at around 38 degrees c +/- 2 degrees. Monostremes have a lower body temperature of around 30 +/- 2. Raises to 40-42 degrees when there is a fever. Dipsosaurus lizard study- put them at 5 temperatures (34,36, 38, 40, 42) and injected a bacteria to cause a fever. Showed that those at 42 did very well while those at lower temperature did not survive more than 4 days. Natural fever for dipsosarurus they actually seek about 40 and 38 when no fever. Bats temperature go down to near freezing then energy consumption is less than 1/10 of normal.
