Illness: interpretive process in which a doctor interprets a set of disease symptoms on a patient. Sickness: broadest scale; the individual patient and his/her relationship to society. Social body: the body and its relationship with other people. How nature and culture come to be what they are. Disease can sometimes appear as if it is material and natural when it is in fact something that is deeply socially and culturally influenced. You present yourself to your gp and they ask you about your symptoms and you are conveying the symptoms. Body politic: the way a whole population has become something that medicine governs. Because we treat obesity as an epidemic or disease, as a sickness, it is something people are reacting to and using as a basis for interaction with other people o. Part of the reason this works the way it does is because of the social interpretation of a category.
