ANTH 243 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Bubonic Plague, Plasmodium, Ice Storm
Document Summary
Resurgent: a disease that has came up from the past. Eld is a result of one of three things. Introduction of a new agent into an area. Recognition of an existing disease that has gone undetected. Change in the environment that provides an epidemiological bridge. 54% of eld are bacteria or rickettsial (parasitic bacterial) and 60. 3% of elds are zoonotic. Change in environment causes more interaction with animals- deforestation. Ecological changes- due to economic development and land use. 3 major periods in which disease burden for the human population changes relatively drastically and quickly. Disease that requires higher population density to maintain itself. Began in the 1800s but more commonly associated with the development of modern medicine in 1928. Need to be a strong, developed nation that has ability to colonize. Without the pressure of infectious disease, mortality declined, leading to longer life spans. With longer life spans came higher rates of chronic diseases.
